There once was a time when the New Zealand Government decided what would be on the radio. In 1966 a few good men set out to change that. The MV Tiri had a transmitter installed and was anchored three miles offshore in the Hauraki Gulf, just outside Government jurisdiction. Despite the best attempts by Government (and mother nature), New Zealand's first private radio station was born.

In 1970, the Government finally caved and allowed Hauraki to broadcast legally from land breaking their long-held monopoly over the airwaves. This started the entire private radio industry in New Zealand. Hauraki has been playing great music ever since.
