To commemorate the New Zealand land wars that occurred in the 1800s has now got it's own public holiday.

Deputy Prime Minister Bill English recently announced the creation of the new public holiday during the return of the Rangiriri battlesite to Maori at Turangawaewae.

Work is now underway to find the best date to mark the commemoration as there are several things to be considered first.

As King Tuheitia's spokesman, Rahui Papa said "one of the things they are asking to consider is it does not clash with any particular battle site commemorations, so that it can be a clean and stand alone date and then people can have their commemorations on their dates free and clear of any hindrances."
