A new twist in the NFL's "Deflate-gate" scandal has seen a US District judge has nullified Tom Brady's four-game suspension.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suspended the New England Patriots for the first four games of the upcoming season, after a league investigation found that Brady was probably "generally aware" that Patriots employees had purposely deflated the balls.

But judge Richard Berman has determined Goodell went too far with the punishment.

Goodell says they'll appeal today's ruling in order to uphold the collectively bargained responsibility to protect the integrity of the game.

But the NFL won't seek to keep Brady from playing during the appeal process, and he will start the New England Patriots' NFL season opener next week.
