Halfback Shaun Johnson's slotted the winning field goal to lift the Kiwis to a 17-16 win over England in their Four Nations opener in Huddersfield.

The Warriors playmaker took the shot with quarter of an hour to play but it proved to be the last scoring act in a back and forth game which saw Jordan Rapana dot down twice.

Johnson said they were put to the sword.

He said they knew they would face a vocal opposition crowd but it was a massive effort.

Coach David Kidwell said it was the performance they needed from Johnson.

He said Johnson really stepped up, but so did everyone in the 17.

The Kiwis meet the Kangaroos next weekend.
