A major coup for this year's domestic Twenty20 competition.

Iconic Sri Lankan batsman Mahela Jayawardene has signed on with the Central Stags for the final six round robin games of the Super Smash, and will stay on for the finals weekend if the team qualifies.

Stags general manager Lance Hamilton said they're delighted to have the 149-test veteran.

"Mahela's a quality signing, a quality player and by all accounts a quality individual as well. So there was a lot of excitement among the boys, and it's been a big coup in securing him."

Sponsorship to afford Jayawardene was secured through the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, who want to link with the Sri Lankan university he is an ambassador for.
