Bruce Springsteen surprised fans who attended his Springsteen On Broadway residency by performing an encore.

The New Jersey musician has been playing special live shows at the Walter Kerr Theatre in New York City for the residency, which began back in October and will span until December.

Fans who attended his Tuesday night show were in for a surprise as Springsteen returned to the stage following his usual set-closer of ‘Born To Run’ to play ‘This Hard Land’. That track was originally intended to be on his 1984 album ‘Born In The USA’, but was only later released as part of his ‘Greatest Hits‘ compilation and the 1998 box set ‘Tracks.

Dedicating the song to his wife Patti Scialfa – who has regularly performed ‘Tougher Than The Rest’ during the residency – Springsteen then encouraged his audience to take pictures of and film the performance, a practice which is usually discouraged. However, a number of fan-shot videos of the performance have since been removed from YouTube due to a copyright claim.
