A new road trip comedy drawing on Green Day's formative years, Nimrods, is heading to theaters for a limited run of special screenings on August 11 and 14.

Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool serve as executive producers on the film, which centers on a teenager named Tommy as he scrambles across the country chasing what he thinks is his shot at having his band open for Green Day on New Year's Eve. What he doesn't know is that the whole thing is a prank orchestrated by his older brother, Wayne.

Kymberli Frueh of distributor Trafalgar Releasing described the project as a tribute to friendship, music, and the pursuit of far-fetched dreams, noting that it draws on the spirit of the generation that watched Green Day's rapid ascent to fame, and that the band's cultural staying power keeps drawing in new fans decades later.

In an interview with Kerrang! last summer, Billie Joe Armstrong shared his impressions of the film, praising the cast and noting he'd caught glimpses of footage so far. He explained that the story pulls from some of the band's own early experiences on the road, though with some creative liberties taken. He described it as having a holiday-movie feel given its New Year's Eve setting, while also being heartfelt and genuinely funny; centred on three young musicians willing to go to any length to chase their dream of making it as a band, something he said the band members themselves know all too well from experience.

Beyond appearances from Green Day themselves, the cast includes Mason Thames, Mckenna Grace, Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Sean Gunn, Bobby Lee and Fred Armisen.

Alongside the announcement, Green Day dropped a new single, "I'm Never Gonna R.I.P.," taken from the film's official soundtrack.

Nimrods will only be in cinemas for two days in August. Tickets go on sale July 14 and you can check out the full list of participating cinemas.
