Noel Gallagher’s 1960 Gibson ES-355, which Liam Gallagher destroyed right before Oasis’s breakup, is headed to auction, and could fetch up to £500k

Noel Gallagher’s 1960 Cherry Red Gibson ES-355, an instrument with a storied place in Oasis history, is set to go under the hammer with an estimated sale price of £250,000 to £500,000.

The guitar was at the centre of the band’s 2009 breakup. According to auctioneers Propstore, Liam Gallagher picked up the instrument during an argument backstage, knowing it was one of Noel’s favourites. “He comes back in and he starts throwing it around like an axe,” Noel said in 2011. Shortly afterwards, Noel announced he was leaving Oasis, bringing the band to an end.

Beyond its role in that incident, the ES-355 was heavily used by both Noel and bandmate Gem Archer. It featured on the Dig Out Your Soul tour in 2008, during a performance of Don’t Look Back in Anger at Wembley Arena, and in Noel’s 2006 acoustic set at Camden’s Koko Club.

The auction comes as Oasis embark on a world tour, their first since reuniting, and one of the most anticipated in recent memory.
