The hugely popular series Stranger Things has become known for its incorporation of music. The show has used a wide range of material from the era, including songs by the Police, The Clash, Duran Duran, Toto, Bon Jovi, Peter Gabriel, Journey and Kiss. This season has made headlines for helping spur massive interest in Kate Bush’s 1985 single “Running Up That Hill”, and now Metallica’s “Master Of Puppets'' has also joined that list.

Fans of the show will already be familiar with Eddie Munson, the metal-loving high school student. In one of the finale’s climactic moments, Eddie distracts flying creatures known as 'demobats' by tearing through “Master of Puppets”.

But to understand how impressive this solo really was, we first have to understand the timeline of the Stranger Things universe.

Stranger Things Season 4 takes place during the 1986 spring break (in mid March). “Master Of Puppets” was released on March 3rd 1986. Meaning Eddie Munson, between school, long sessions of D&D, his side hustles and evading the police, had 2 weeks to learn the title track. Without the use of the internet… Impressive.
