Tom Morello recruits Phantogram for electro-tinged song "Driving To Texas"

Tom Morello's upcoming album 'The Atlas Underground Fire' is proving to be a diverse project. After sharing its first offering — a cover of AC/DC's "Highway to Hell" featuring Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder and Bruce Springsteen — earlier this month, he shared its second single this week and it has a very different feel.

The Rage Against The Machine guitarist recruited Phantogram for "Driving To Texas," and the duo put their electro touch on the haunting ballad, which also features singer Sarah Barthel's vocals. But this is still a Tom Morello song, and thus is equipped with a pretty epic guitar solo.

“The guitar solo needed to feel like a vengeful angel who has come down to decide the fate of the protagonist,” Morello said. “Will they descend into the abyss or will they find redemption?”

'The Atlas Underground Fire' will also feature the likes of Chris Stapleton, Damian Marley, Bring Me The Horizon, Mike Posner, grandson and more, and was the product of quarantine. "Whereas the previous Atlas Underground record had a very strict manifesto of this alloy of Marshall stack guitar and bass drops with social justice ghost stories as the thread woven between, this record was basically a drowning man grabbing at a life raft," Morello explained. "I was playing as if my life and sanity depended on it. These songs are really a product of this historical moment. They came out of a dark, anxiety-riddled period as a true musical beam of hope."

'The Atlas Underground Fire' is slated for an October 15 release.
