At least 60 people are dead after a truck ploughed into a crowd celebrating Bastille Day on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, France during a fireworks display.

Images on Twitter showed about a dozen people lying on the street, some being attended to, and videos posted online showed people fleeing in panic.

A fire erupted at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, but Police said the fire was not related to the Nice attack.

Images coming out of Nice showed about a dozen people lying on the street, some being attended to, and videos posted online showed people fleeing in panic.

A crowd was gathered at the Place Massena - the city's main square and fireworks had just been let off, when the attack happened at about 10pm local time. A cordon has been established around the square.

The reporter said the attack happened near the Hotel Le Negresco.

A witness told AP he saw the truck's driver emerge from the vehicle with a gun, and start shooting into the crowd.

The truck's driver has reportedly been shot.

A spokesman for the Alpes Maritime prefecture advised locals to 'stay indoors' as gunfire was heard, and a lorry was driven into a crowd on the Promenade des Anglais, Peter Allen reports.

Fireworks were filling the night sky as the drama unfolded, as the crowds enjoyed July 14th, which is always a Bank Holiday in France.
