The All Blacks have won team of the year at the World Rugby awards.

Dan Carter has been named world rugby's player of the year.

Carter said it's a special way to bow out.

"If you told me that this was how my last 24 hours of being an All Black would be, I wouldn't have believed you to be honest."

"It's been a dream come true."

But Steve Hansen has missed out on coach of the year, with the award given to Australian counterpart Michael Cheika.

For Cheika, it was a mixed blessing.

"It's the wrong trophy you know, we came here to try to get a certain outcome for ourselves, but I'm really honoured, don't get me wrong at all.'

Julian Savea's barnstorming run against France in the World Cup quarter final has earned him try of the year at the World Rugby awards.

Savea drew comparisons to Jonah Lomu when he ran over three players to score one of three tries in the 62-13 win.

Meanwhile breakthrough player of the year Nehe Milner-Skudder is still pinching himself over his stunning season.

He was a Hurricanes rookie at the start of 2015.

Milner-Skudder said he never thought he's round out his rugby year with a World Cup medal and the title of breakthrough player of the year.

In Women's Rugby, Kendra Cocksedge of the Black Ferns won women's player of the year.

Portia Woodman was named the Women's Sevens player of the year after her side won another World Series crown.
