The Black Caps are waiting on a specialist's opinion to determine when Tim Southee will return.

The Black Caps seamer injured his foot during the third ODI loss to Sri Lanka and missed yesterday's rained out fixture in Nelson.

New Zealand coach Mike Hesson said they're unsure of the severity or even the cause of it.

He said it might be a bit of a back-dated injury and think it could be from when he got hit in the foot by Mitchell Starc in the first test against Australia.

The Black Caps travel to Mount Maunganui today as they prepare for the final match of the series on Tuesday.

New Zealand lead 2-1.
