The Black Caps have taken an unassailable lead in the two-match Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka, with a tight three run victory in game one in Mount Maunganui.

New Zealand's restricted the visitors to 179 for nine from their 20 overs, just short of the 183 required, with Matt Henry and Trent Boult each taking three wickets.

The hosts earlier posted 182 for four from their allotted overs, with Martin Guptill and Kane Williamson scoring half centuries.

All-rounder Grant Elliott says it could've been better.

"It was a good performance but there's still those small things, let's not take away [from] the win but there's a couple of no balls there and a couple of shots at the end I felt I should have got."

Game two is in Auckland on Sunday.
