The Black Caps have started the tour of Australia in superb fashion, with a 102-run thrashing of a strong Prime Minister's XI in Canberra.

Jimmy Neesham and Trent Boult led the bowling attack, picking up three wickets each relatively cheaply as the Black Caps dismissed the selection side for 205 in the 46th over.

Tom Latham earlier top scored for New Zealand with 131 as they posted 307 and says it couldn't have gone much better.

"It was nice to contribute in a winning match and I think the way the guys played today was certainly a step in the right direction for us on this tour."

The match was played with the pink ball that will be used for the historic third test in Adelaide and Black Caps batsman Tom Latham said they did learn something about it.

"Probably the ball deteriorated a little bit more than what we've seen, so that's probably one thing that we'll take from it."

Martin Guptill scored 94 at the top of the order alongside Latham.

New Zealand plays the Cricket Australia XI in a two-day match also in Canberra starting today.
