Brendon McCullum has paid tribute to his teammates and the country's fans in his farewell to the New Zealand team today.

McCullum has finished his 101st and final test on a losing note, but told the assembled crowd they were in his thoughts.

''Thanks to the fans. We've been through our ups and downs but I hope you guys are incredibly proud of the group of young men we have here, but also who have represented New Zealand over the last few years.

''You have supported us through thick and thin, and these guys will serve you well over the next couple of years."

McCullum admitted there have been good and bad days.

''We've achieved some pretty cool things, and we've lost some games as well. But you are absolutely great men and for the rest of my life I'll lremember the times and experiences we've had."

McCullum gave the new leader, Kane Williamson, and the senior players an endorsement too.

''I know the group taking the team forward have some fine leaders amongst you and I firmly believe this team will go to a new level."
