Cairns Hit With $3.3 Million Civil Claim

Chris Cairns will be back in London's High Court next year to defend a $3.3 million civil claim for fraud, brought by former Indian Premier League boss Lalit Modi.

Telegraph Sport is reporting the case has been scheduled for the court's spring session which starts on March 7th and lasts until the end of May.

Cairns will have to appear in person to defend the claim which has been lodged by Modi in the light of new evidence emerging since their libel trial in 2012.

Modi is seeking to recoup the $200,000 he paid in damages, plus costs that mounted up to $3.3 million.

The Telegraph says Black Caps captain Brendon McCullum and Lou Vincent may have to testify against Cairns again.

Cairns was cleared this week of perjury and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Telegraph journalist Nick Hoult said it's not a surprise move by Modi even though Cairns was recently cleared of perjury.

"He was always going to do this on the basis that the McCullum and Vincent evidence has come to light since the libel trial, neither of their witness statements to the ICC were part of the original libel hearing."
