There's a call for A-League players to have the final say on whether playing surfaces are up to standard after Saturday night's match between the Victory and the Phoenix when both teams struggled on an uneven pitch.

The FFA inspected the ground last Thursday and gave the all clear, but the Professional Footballers Association has since claimed it was a huge health and safety risk.

PFA player relations manager Simon Colosimo says the buck should stop with the players, as they're the ones at the most serious risk of injury.

"If a field is questionable, maybe some players or representatives of players can go 'Well it may look hypothetically appealing, it may look fine, however this is just not good enough to play football on'," he said.

Colosimo says the minimum pitch standards must be reviewed, along with how they're assessed by the FFA.

"We'd like to see what process is taken...we'd like to see on what grounds they approve a field."
