The Hurricanes have become the third New Zealand team to ensure their place in the Super Rugby playoffs with a gritty 28-17 win over the Waratahs in Sydney.

After leading 11-nil early, the Canes were then forced to come from six points down to secure the win with Beauden Barrett scoring 18 points.

'Canes coach Chris Boyd is delighted to bag the win, particularly when both sides had so much to play for.

The Hurricanes are two points off final round opponents the Crusaders after they romped to a 85-26 win over the Rebels in Christchurch to remain second in the New Zealand conference.

The Western Force's sorry season continues with a 22-3 loss at home to the Stormers, while the Bulls have trounced the Sunwolves 50-3.

The Highlanders can claim their playoff spot with victory over the Jaguares this morning in Buenos Aires.
