The Chiefs have prevailed 27-21 after a tense arm wrestle with the Crusaders in their Super Rugby derby in Christchurch.

The match started off tight and scrappy, and the Crusaders took a 13-8 lead into the halftime break after a try apiece to both teams.

The Chiefs drew first blood in the second spell to take the lead through a Seta Tamanivalu try, but the Crusaders responded quickly when David Havili dotted down.

A Richie Mo'unga penalty goal put the Crusaders ahead 21-15 in the 63rd minute, however the Chiefs soon turned around the momentum to launch a fightback.

Chiefs fullback Damian McKenzie capped off a superb individual effort by crossing over for a converted try which stole the lead, before the win was sealed by a try to Sam Cane from a powerful lineout drive.

The match was marred with Crusaders debutant Reed Prinsep being assisted off after suffering a severe head knock.
