The Chiefs have crushed the Reds 50-5 in Brisbane to take a major step towards winning the New Zealand conference in Super Rugby.

Dave Rennie's side ran in eight tries to one in romp to move six points clear of the Crusaders who host the Rebels tonight.

Chiefs captain Sam Cane says this is the time they need to fire with the Highlanders next week.

"At this stage of the season it's all about momentum going into the playoffs and building each week," he said.

The Blues meanwhile have thrashed Australian conference leaders the Brumbies 40-15 at Eden Park, scoring six tries to two.

Coach Tana Umaga says they are playing with confidence and having fun, and hailed a strong all round performance which is "testament to the work we've put into that area of really knuckling down and keeping things simple and going about our roles in the structures that we have."

It comes back to what everyone was taught as kids, regardless of the pace of the game, Umaga said.

The Lions stay top of the overall ladder after thumping the Southern Kings 52-21 in Johannesburg.
