Chiefs coach Dave Rennie is hailing a special performance.

The Chiefs have thumped Wales 40-7 in Hamilton, emphatically becoming the first Super Rugby franchise to knock over an international team.

Rennie said it was special as they spent a fair chunk of the game without the ball.

He said there was a lot of scrambling defensively and on attack they were very clinical.

Former All Blacks first-five Stephen Donald orchestrated the win and received a standing ovation as he left the field with cramp.

Donald said it was a buzz and while he's never been one for enjoying defence, it was fun when they didn't have the ball as they played together.
