The Wellington Phoenix have crashed to a 3-1 defeat to a 10-man Newcastle side.

The Jets were gifted the opener from the penalty spot and scored two more before the Phoenix grabbed their only goal through Matthew Ridenton.

Coach Ernie Merrick is frustrated with his team: "The bottom line is, we had twice as many shots as the opposition and the only person who could score on our team was a nineteen-year-old wing back who came on as a substitute."

The Phoenix have not won in the A-League for six straight games.
