Former All Black winger Zac Guildford is to receive a Super Rugby lifeline at the Waratahs.

Guildford's returned to New Zealand to play for Hawke's Bay in the ITM Cup after quitting his contract with French club Clermont.

He says there has been some interest from New Zealand Super Rugby sides, but a chance to link up with former Crusaders assistant coach Daryl Gibson's appealing.

Guildford said he plays his best footy when he plays for someone he's passionate about and hopes people will see that with the Magpies and Waratahs if it eventuates.

However while he's playing fullback for Hawke's Bay in the ITM Cup, he doubts he will be taking Israel Folau's jersey in Sydney.

"Wings looking the most likely spot if it all goes to plan."

Zac Guildford would take up the import player spot in the Waratahs vacated by Jacques Potgieter.

He said he's close to confirming the deal.
