Seamer Matt Henry's been sent back to domestic cricket to iron out a few inconsistencies from the Black Caps tour of Australia.

Neil Wagner has won out over Henry in the trimmed test squad of 12 for this month's home series against Sri Lanka, following a mixed bowling display from Henry in the second test in Perth.

National selector Gavin Larsen says Henry will be given solid feedback on where to improve.

"Matt did a good job," he said. "Just a little inconsistent, or should I say not his consistent best, so he'll go back to Canterbury."

Luke Ronchi and Hamish Rutherford have also been omitted.

Larsen is also refusing to put heat on Martin Guptill to perform, saying they're satisfied Guptill will rebound.

"He had a tough series but we'll get him home and get him into New Zealand conditions and hopefully he starts producing runs on a regular basis at the top of the order."
