Black Caps coach Mike Hesson's accentuating what positives he can from the first test humbling against Australia.

Both teams remain in Wellington enjoying a day off after the test ended a day and a half early through the tourists' dominance.

Hesson said Henry Nicholls' debut was a highlight.

"I think he certainly showed he belonged, very composed and I thought he went about things well. I thought also Trent Boult was a step up in terms of sustaining his pace."

Both sides head to Christchurch tomorrow ahead of the second and final test starting on Saturday, and New Zealand Cricket is going the extra mile to calm any fears over player safety.

Head of Cricket Lindsay Crocker said they're putting in the effort to guarantee player safety after Sunday's 5.7 quake.

"Just to give us additional satisfaction that everything's fine," he said. Crocker said engineers will be inspecting areas such as the team hotel, and the Hagley Oval pavilion.
