The Highlanders have wrapped up an impressive Super Rugby victory, winning 26-13 in their derby with the Chiefs in Hamilton.

The southerners were the only team to cross the try line in the first half, with prop Dan Lienert-Brown sprinting through for the opening try of the game.

The visitors took a 13-3 lead at the halftime break, with Chiefs midfielder Charlie Ngatai sinbinned right before the break due to a mid-air contact with Highlanders forward Elliot Dixon.

A patient but skilful Highlanders outfit continued to build on their lead in the second half, with Waisake Naholo scoring a double in his return from injury.

Despite second half Chiefs tries to Aaron Cruden and debutant back Sam Vaka, the Highlanders were able to held on for an important win.

They now trail the conference-leading Chiefs and Crusaders by two points on the Super Rugby ladder.
