The Hurricanes are Super Rugby champions for the first time in their history.

They've put together a clinical defensive display to beat the Lions 20-3 in Wellington.

Beauden Barrett opened the scoring with a penalty before converting a Cory Jane try when he crossed in the corner.

Barrett added a try of his own in the second half when he pounced on the loose ball to seal victory for the Hurricanes.

Hurricanes halfback TJ Perenara was full of emotion after the final whistle.

"It's been a long, long time for this group, and for the whole Hurricanes franchise itself, and its just awesome to be a part of," he said. "These boys have put in a lot of work."
