Brumbies number eight Ita Vaea has been forced to retire from rugby immediately due to heart problems.

Scans revealed a recurrence of a blood clot condition that could've killed him - the same condition that saw him miss two seasons of Super Rugby.

Vaea had symptoms of the condition throughout pre-season training, but doctors were happy with how he was managing it, until his leg started to swell up and he was forced to leave the field against the Chiefs just two weeks ago.

He was put on blood-thinning medication four years ago which saw him miss the 2013 and 2014 campaigns, but he returned last season.

Vaea was part of a Wallabies camp just last week.
