Highlanders CEO Roger Clark has confirmed Jamie Joseph has signed to coach Japan at the end of the upcoming Super Rugby season.

Clark says the timing of the announcement isn't ideal, but it clears up all the speculation of the last few weeks.

Joseph has strong ties to Japan, having played for the national side at the 1999 World Cup and coached Sanix.

He says it's the toughest decision he's ever had to make in his coaching career.

Jamie Joseph says he will always be extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to have been involved with the Highlanders and the team will always hold a special place in his heart.

He will replace outgoing coach Eddie Jones, who has signed with England after taking Japan through their best ever World Cup, which included a stunning win over South Africa.

The coaching move was due to be announced this afternoon, but has been released on allblacks.com
