Mitchell McClenaghan expects to return to the bowling crease next week.

The Black Caps fast bowler is recovering from facial surgery after being felled by a bouncer in the first one-day international against Pakistan last week.

McClenaghan said he's looking forward to the challenge of getting back in the nets.

"I know it's going to be hard, you know the brain works in funny ways in terms of letting you do these kind of things, but I'm pretty confident I'll be able to overcome them."

He said he'll meet with a specialist tomorrow and set a plan in place.

"I've had a meeting with a surgeon yesterday, he's pretty happy for me to start doing some light exercise in a couple of days, and progressing to bowling within a week."

McClenaghan said he may play a match for Auckland in the Plunket Shield, but his focus is on getting right for next month's Twenty20 World Cup.
