Former All Black Murray Mexted believes Sonny Bill Williams isn't cutting it in international sevens.

There are now just three tournaments remaining in the world series for players to show what they're capable of before the squad's named for the Rio Olympics.

Mexted said the world series will have shown coach Sir Gordon Tietjens a few things.

He said Tietjens has discovered a few players, but also exposed some who aren't up to it and unfortunately Williams is one of them.

Mexted said as a forward in sevens, Williams is required to do things that aren't his forte such as contesting kick-offs and scrums.
