A chance encounter with an old teammate has seen former All Black Nathan Mauger appointed assistant coach at the new Japanese Sunwolves Super Rugby franchise.

Nathan Mauger has accepted an initial six month contract with the franchise after bumping into head coach Mark Hammett over the Christmas holiday break.

He says they were both coincidentally holidaying at Port Levy on Banks Peninsula when Hammett sounded him out about the role.

Mauger was the backs coach for the Canterbury U19 side which won the national title last year.
