New Zealand has missed the semi-finals at an under-20 rugby world championship for the first time, despite beating Wales in their final pool match.

The reigning champions escaped with a last-gasp 18-17 win over the Welsh in Manchester, leaving them with a nervous wait to hold on to their semi-final qualifier position as the 'lucky loser'.

Second five Jordie Barrett knocked over a final minute penalty to move his side into the 'next best' qualifier spot behind the three pool winners.

Barrett said they had done all they can and while they missed out on the bonus point at least they got a win.

However, South Africa's thrashed France 40 -31 to secure a bonus point win and move into the semi-finals.

The Junior Boks join Ireland, Argentina and England in the semi-finals.
