Otago's University Oval is about to receive a $750,000 upgrade to meet the standard for international matches.

The eight week project, starting today, will increase capacity by 70 percent, with a 100 metre retaining wall being built to create seating for over three thousand spectators.

Otago Cricket chief executive Mike Coggan said they want to make sure what they offer to international cricket is relevant, and want Dunedin to be considered for big games coming up, bringing in cricket fans.

"Given the content that's coming into the country around test cricket at ODI one day international cricket, we want to make sure that we can also stand on our own two feet and get those big games."

Coggan said the money has been raised through the Otago Cricket Association, community organisations and businesses.

He said they hope the work will be completed by early May so it doesn't impact on the rugby season.
