The Wellington Phoenix have extended their winless run to seven matches as the A-League playoffs becomes a distant proposition.

The Phoenix have fallen to a 3-1 away defeat to Melbourne City, conceding two goals in the first half and a third just after halftime.

Roly Bonevacia pulled a goal back with 25 minutes left but couldn't ignite a fightback from his side.

Kickoff was delayed by close to an hour due to an overrun in the curtain-raiser.

The Phoenix are in eighth, seven points outside the top six playoff spots.

Their next game is against Central Coast in Christchurch on Saturday night.
