The Players Association will try to thwart any idea of moving the Wellington Sevens to a different date.

The tournament's popularity over the past few years has declined with some suggesting the Auckland Nines has poached its crowds.

World Rugby has compacted the sevens circuit from nine tournaments in seven months, to 10 tournaments in five and a half months.

Players Association boss Rob Nichol says Wellington's place in the World Series works well with the following week's tournament in Sydney.

"It's not just a matter of shifting one tournament base, it actually effects the whole schedule."

"From a players' perspective, we think ten tournaments in five-and-a-half months is too intense anyway."

New Zealand Rugby is expected to confirm Wellington Sevens' extension at a board meeting today.
