An unbeaten double century from Ross Taylor and 166 from Kane Williamson have brought the Black Caps back into the second cricket test against Australia at the WACA.

New Zealand is 510 for six at stumps on day three, trailing by 49 runs with Taylor unbeaten on 235, his highest test score.

Taylor and Williamson put on a record 265 against Australia for the third wicket as the Black Caps got back on level terms.

Williamson is thrilled with his partnership with Taylor.

"He's batting fantastically and hopefully he can come out and keep going tomorrow but what an outstanding knock from Rosco and it's certainly one of his better ones," he said.

"The Australian batsmen has ... shown us that if you do get a partnership you need to try and make it as big as you can and it's nice to contribute to what is so far a pretty good first innings total."

Batting coach Craig McMillan said Taylor was immense.

"And it had been brewing for some time. He had been a bit short of time in the middle and runs but ... form's temporary, class is permanent and I think that got shown."

The only real joy for Australia was Mitchell Starc clocking 160.4 kilometres per hour with one ball, the fastest delivery recorded in Test history.
