Sonny Bill Williams is paying tribute to his sister after they both earned spots in the Rio Olympics sevens squads.

The two-time World Cup winning All Black and sister Niall have been named in their respective squads of 12 for the Games.

"Seeing where she's come from - a mother of two...When she first started her journey she wasn't contracted or anything like that, so she'd get up in the early hours of the morning, do her training, look after the girls, then do her training again at night."

Women's coach Sean Horan will get his players back in camp tomorrow, while they're planning to head to Florida just before the games to acclimatise to conditions.

Horan said already the excitement is there.

"Just embrace it and be excited about it, because it's never been done before. That's what we say to the girls, that's what brings the smile to your face, that's what you want."

Liam Messam will return to the Chiefs in Super Rugby as injury cover while he remains on standby for games, after missing the cut for the men's squad.

He told Veitch on Sport he was grateful for the opportunity.
