A tick from Sir Gordon Tietjens for his highest profile recruit after his first taste of competitive sevens at the Wellington World Sevens event.

Sonny Bill Williams threw off the pass for All Blacks Sevens teammate Joe Webber to score against South Africa to complete a perfect day.

It came after he earlier threw an errant offload to allow the Blitzbokke taking the lead.

Tietjens says Williams did well and "will get better and better".

The All Blacks Sevens meet Kenya in the quarters today, with England to play Argentina, Australia to meet South Africa, and Fiji to play the USA.

The first days passed off mostly quietly, with only three people arrested and just under 60 thrown out of the ground.

Wellington Free Ambulance treated 35 people for mainly minor complaints.

Gate sales boosted numbers to around 14,000 for the first day's 24 games.

Police say they were pleased with crowd behaviour.
