While Steven Adams basketball skills are making headlines in the US, they are being overshadowed by those about his appearance.

The seven-foot-tall Kiwi star has been likened to Star Wars character Chewbacca as his hair grows wilder and moustache grows longer.

And for the first time he has revealed why he grew his facial hair and moustache in a revealing interview with GQ magazine.

"At the start of this season, I grew out my facial hair because I actually could. I guess I went through puberty, so now that's a thing," he told the style guide.

"I think I look really weird with short hair. So I figured, if I've got a moustache, I think it looks less creepy with long hair. Like a wild look."

The Kiwi star also revealed how the moustache goes down with both sexes.

"I don't actually do it for the ladies, it's more a guy thing, an appreciation. All the dudes want to do it, but they don't have the balls to do it, so they just give me the nod."

Adams admitted that people think he is 30 instead of his actual age which is 22 because of the moustache, but that also has advantages.

"It just gives me a bigger market to work with, 'cause the older ladies come my way, too, mate."

His inspiration for the look had been Magnum PI star Tom Selleck.

"I wanted to go more in his direction which is a lot of just testosterone and man."
