A third straight loss for the Warriors to open the NRL season.

They've been sunk 21-14 by the Melbourne Storm at Mount Smart Stadium, having led 14-12 heading into the final 11 minutes.

But the visitors were able to control the death throes of the match, with a Cameron Smith penalty levelling the match before a go-ahead Cooper Cronk field goal.

Marika Koroibete iced the win with a late converted try.

Cronk said it was a "great result".

"That win was pretty hard to get out in the second half - we let one try in."

But, he's putting the success down to defence.

"Our defence was rock solid, we competed and never gave up.  I think that was the corner stone of our victory today."

It's the Warriors 11th straight loss in first grade games.

The Warriors next host the Knights on Easter Monday.
