A Kiwi has won the NRL's highest individual accolade.

North Queensland Cowboys back-rower Jason Taumalolo has been named the joint-winner of the Dally M medal with Melbourne Storm halfback Cooper Cronk.

Taumalolo's humbled to be just the second Kiwi to win the coveted prize, 24 years after Gary Freeman became the first.

"The amount of talent in this competition going around - to have even been up there is rewarding in itself, it makes it even more rewarding sharing it alongside Cronk."

"If anything I'm more grateful for my teammates than anything."

Cronk said Taumalolo is inspiring a new generation of players.

"Normally they want to do the sidestep like Benji Marshall, or kick a ball like Thurston, but I dare say a few of them are running like Jason does."

Cooper Cronk joins an elite group of eight players to win the Dally M award more than once.
