Blues coach Tana Umaga is defending the decision to kick an equalising penalty rather than go for the win in the dying stages of their 25-all draw with the Reds in Brisbane.

Ihaia West kicked a penalty after the final siren to snatch the draw for the Blues, who trailed by 10 points with 10 minutes to go.

Umaga said the players wanted to go for the line-out, but he wanted to be sure of getting something out of the match.

"We were a man down, it had been a long evening, obviously in this heat, and we weren't assured of winning the game...on those terms I just thought best for us to go get the points."
