Blues coach Tana Umaga has rung the changes for Friday's Super Rugby match against the Hurricanes.

There are just eight survivors from the 15 that started in last week's meek showing against the Crusaders.

Prop Charlie Faumuina starts for the first time this year, while Akira Ioane is at number eight and Steven Luatua atlock. Bryn Hall and Ihaia West are back at halfback and first five.

Meanwhile, Patrick Tuipulotu has been dropped to the bench.

Coach Tana Umaga said it's tough on Tuipulotu, but he'll be the first to say he wasn't at his best against the Crusaders last week.

"We know what we're going to get from Pat coming off the bench now, and a motivated Patrick is good for us."

Umaga is sure the changes will again raise a few eyebrows.

"We've got a plan in place, and we've always had from the start, and we think this is the best side to go up against the Hurricanes and get us a result."
