The Black Caps can sight victory, but it's tightened up in the second cricket test against Sri Lanka in Hamilton.

New Zealand's lost Mitchell Santner caught behind for four late in the day, having earlier seen the fall of Brendon McCullum for 18 to be 142 for five at stumps on day three needing another 47 runs to win.

Kane Williamson looks at ease as he's unbeaten on 78 with BJ Watling joining him at the crease late in the day.

Dushmantha Chameera has picked up four of the wickets for Sri Lanka.

New Zealand paceman Neil Wagner said it's been intriguing.

"I think it was pretty awesome test cricket to be honest, yeah that's why you call it test cricket because it's a test of obviously the conditions and your skills in the heart of battle and heat of the moment so yes I thought it was a pretty good day."

Earlier, Sri Lanka fell from 71 without loss to be all out for 133 in its second innings, with Tim Southee picking up four wickets and Wagner three.
