The Wellington Phoenix are triumphing a stern defensive effort, to hold on to a deserved 2-1 A-League win over Melbourne City at Westpac Stadium.

Goals from Louis Fenton and Matthew Ridenton denied City the chance to secure the minor premiership.

Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick says while the forwards get the natural credit, the defence was immense.

He says the backline was rock solid and Manny Muscat had one of his best games in a while.

Meanwhile, the Western Sydney Wanderers have taken a three-point lead at the top of the ladder, after a 2-1 win over Perth Glory.
