Breakers boss Richard Clarke is dismissing the notion that winning the A-League could help the Wellington Phoenix's future.

The club's position beyond this year is unknown as they try to find out exactly why their 10-year licence extension was rejected by Football Federation Australia.

Fans hope that winning the competition could help them secure a longer licence than the four-year extension the FFA have offered.

However, Richard Clarke says a winning New Zealand club isn't necessarily the most attractive thing.

"Winning is probably going to weaken the case for inclusion because if you take putting the broadcast rights for finals on in New Zealand rather than in Australia then it's not necessarily the best thing to grow the league over there."

Clarke says he'd encourage the Phoenix bosses to take the four-year extension and hope for a miraculous change of heart.
