World number one Jason Day admits golf's lack of history and tradition at the Olympics is a major reason top players are pulling out of Rio.

The Australian has joined a host of top male golfers in opting out of Rio citing Zika virus fears.

He said the reason we are not seeing leading track and field or swimming contenders pull out is due to their sport's rich history at the Olympics.

Day said track and field and swimming are such a huge part of Olympic history and you see a lot more people staying in the Olympics just because of that.

So far none of the leading women have decided to skip golf's return to the Games.

Day said some of those women might be in a different situation where they maybe younger, single and at a different time of their life.

He said he's not prepared to put his family at risk.
