Australia has crushed the Black Caps by 208 runs on the final morning of the first test in Brisbane.

After starting the the day with a fighting chance of holding out for a draw, the Australian bowlers quickly wrapped up the innings.

Ross Taylor fell early trying to hook Josh Hazlewood, bringing the injured Jimmy Neesham to the crease.

He only managed three runs before being bounced out by Mitchell Johnson.

After spearheading New Zealand's fight through the opening session on day five, captain Brendon McCullum was caught in the slips for 80.

Replays show McCullum didn't in fact hit the ball, but his team had run out of reviews.

Initially the appeal was for LBW, before the ball ballooned off the pad to Steve Smith at 2nd slip. Umpire Nigel Llong called the decision as caught, not LBW.

Doug Bracewell fell for a duck and Tim Southee went for five.

Trent Boult and Mark Craig put up an entertaining fight for the final wicket, flogging boundaries around the ground. However, the stand was ended by Mitchell Starc.

The pick of the bowlers was spinner Nathan Lyon, who finished with 3 for 63, including the key scalps of Kane Williamson, Martin Guptill and BJ Watling.

The loss means the Black Caps will need to win in either Perth or Adelaide to square the three match series.

They will have to do that without the services of Neesham, who has been ruled out of the remainder of the tour, and possibly without Tim Southee who picked up a back niggle during the course of the match.
